Sophie & James, the Sussex Bakehouse team

Welcome to Sussex Bakehouse, not your ordinary cakes, bakes and treats!

We’re James & Sophie and we run Sussex Bakehouse, a small, independent bakery business making delicious treats from our professional kitchen in Peacehaven (a beautiful town close to Brighton, Lewes and Newhaven).

For as long as we can remember we’ve loved baking and cooking. We truly know the joy that cakes and other treats bring, which is why we decided to leave our day jobs in the catering industry and establish our very own bakery business.

We’re passionate about crafting scrumptious, beautiful bakes by hand, using the tastiest ingredients we can get our hands on. We like to do things a little differently and we’re very inventive in our approach to baking, producing unique creations that look as good as they taste!

Meet James & Sophie - The Sussex Bakehouse ‘Dream Team’

James - Sussex Bakehouse

Jamesstarted working in the catering industry at the age of 13, and has since worked in all manner of kitchens from one of Brighton’s most famous hotels to an award winning 2aa Rosette restaurant. He gained experience in all sections of professional kitchens, with his favourite being pastry. He owes his Grandmother for his love of food, with every visit cakes would be baked, his favourite being a fresh out the oven Lemon Drizzle!

Sophierealised that working with cakes and pastries was her dream whilst she was employed in the pastry kitchen at one of Brighton’s leading hotels. Sophie then went on to bake for various kitchens, bakeries and cakes shops across Sussex, where she honed her skills for detailed cake artistry, making delicious pastries and wedding & event catering. Sophie owes her love of food to her Mother and Father, growing up Sophie and her Mother would bake cakes and her Father was always willing to be chief taste tester, his favourite being a warm sticky bun or a fresh out of the oven croissant!

We first met when Sophie turned up for a trial shift at James’ place of work, we instantly hit it off and became known as ‘The Dream Team’ as we were able to work incredibly well together without having to say a word! It wasn’t long before we began dating and formed an incredibly strong bond both in and outside of the kitchen.

We decided that a new adventure was on the horizon in 2013 and travelled out to the Three Valleys in France where we ran a 5* Chalet kitchen. The highlights of living in France were collecting freshly baked baguettes and sweet treats from the local bakery and patisseries every morning and this experience really secured our love for all baked goods.

These events and many more have inspired us to develop what is now to be known as;
